Chapter 18 Resources – Online Teaching with Zoom
Zoom Discussion/Activity Guide Example
High School Earth Science Lab
Activity Time: 60-75 Minutes in Breakouts
#1 Task – Virtual Field Trip Lab to Explore Crown Butte, Montana
A) As a team, work through and discuss the virtual field trip to Crown Butte in Montana (11 webpages). Note, the links to the next pages often require you to scroll to the very bottom of the page; other times, they are in the middle of the page.
B) Discuss the Crown Butte Field Trip Worksheet (download here), complete the worksheet, and submit it to me on the classroom website.
#2 Resources
To complete this task, you will need to have completed this week’s reading on igneous geology. You will also need to access the Crown Butte Virtual Field Trip and the Worksheet.
#3 Working Together
I expect you to work together on every question (no divide-and-conquer). I will be rotating through your breakout teams to assist you with any questions, so jot down questions as they come up. Remember, you can contact me at any time if you need help.
- Assign a scribe for your group to type your answers into the worksheet and submit it on behalf of the group.
- Assign someone in the group to screenshare the virtual field trip pages.
#4 Team
A) For this lab/virtual field trip, we will focus on our commitment to participate. We want everyone to take responsibility for moving the conversation forward, asking questions, making observations, etc. Nobody should hang back, and nobody should be doing more than their share of the work. I believe you, as a team, can find that balance. During my check-in times, I’ll ask how this is going.
B) During your time, I’d like you to notice others’ contributions and write out a word of appreciation for that person and send it to them via chat. Alternatively, if you finish early, your team can take a few minutes to share your words of appreciation.
#6 Keeping on Track
Here are a few milestones to help you keep you on track:
- Class Begins at 10 AM
- Begin Questions 10:10 AM
- Finish Question #13 by 10:50
- Finish Final Question #24 by 11:25
- Break 11:25 – 11:30
- Full-Class Lab Review 11:30 AM to 12:50 PM
